Australia, Northern Territory, Uluru-Kata Tjutu National Park, Kata Tjutu (The Olgas)

Most people think the wealthiest region in Australia is Sydney, but it’s actually the mineral rich Northern Territory.  It’s here the highest wages are paid.  The trade off is that one has to endure the intense heat, navigate extremely rugged terrain, and there’s little or no social activity happens outside of the populated areas of Alice Springs and Darwin.  Now if you’re a photographer, the Northern Territory is ideal. I rushed into Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to capture the sunset striking the Uluru rock after 8 hours of driving from Alice Springs.... Read The Rest →

‘Running Theme’, Australia, Melbourne, Grafitti, Alleyway

This is a shot I posted before on my site, but I’ve gone back and re processed it. I’ve also cropped it as a panoramic shot. I enjoy the panoramic crop – the removal of the foreground and excess sky works well with panoramas and naturally takes your eye from one end to the other. The human eye naturally sees the world in panoramic fashion. In fact, you may or may not have noticed, but in recent years football games have been broadcast in more of wide angle, making it... ‘Terrarium’, Australia, Queensland, Cairns, Daintree Rainforest

One of the hardest colors to deal with in photographs is green. True green, is rarely captured. Most of the green you see in the photograph is actually yellow. That is not true for photographs I took in the Daintree Rainforest in Australia. Located just north of Cairns, this huge terrarium is one of the oldest Rainforests in the world. Lush, green and steamy is exactly how I remember it. When processing this photo, I duplicated the layer in photoshop and increased the extreme highlights and dark areas. I then... Read The Rest →

‘Running Theme’, Australia, Melbourne, Graffiti, Alleyway

Again, this is another view I’ve posted before, but it’s one of my favorites and I couldn’t resist going back to it in Lightroom the other day.  I used a different crop and processing technique, giving this vantage point a completely different view than my previous photo of downtown Melbourne. This is busy week for me.  I’m currently in the process of revamping my website, and will be traveling a bit again this Thursday.  I’m looking forward to a new set of photographs, adding a new location to my website... ‘Man-O-War’, Australia, Northern Territory, Darwin, Harbor Clouds

It seems to me more landscape photographers come from Australia than any other place.  Australia’s landscapes are some of the best in the world and its colors (ranging from the red sands in the desert to its turquoise coral reefs) are absolutely spectacular. I caught this cloud making its way over the bay in Darwin, Australia.  It reminded me of the Man-O-War Jellyfish with their odd looking sail formations that stick out of the water and their tentacles that reach down from it. Australia certainly has its share of jellyfish.... Read The Rest →

‘Blazin’ Orange’, Australia, Northern Territory, Alice Springs, Uluru-Katja Tjuta National Park, Ayers Rock

Australia’s most iconic rock glows at sunset.  It’s a spectacular sight to behold.  It made the 6 hour drive, 4 hour plane ride to Alice Springs and 15+ hour plane ride to Australia worth it.  The rock really is in the middle of nowhere. I caught the landmark at sunset in the above photo.  I had one night there and unfortunately there were no clouds in the sky to backdrop the rock.  Uluru’s perfect moment (clouds or no clouds) is just as the sun falls below the horizon and the... ‘Anchors Away’, Australia, The Great Ocean Road, Shipwreck Beach

The coral rock on the southside of Australia is really odd.  Huge potholes, such as the one above, made taking this shot a bit tricky.  The waves would come crashing in and I’d have to pick up my tripod and scramble to the beach in order to avoid becoming soaking wet.  The great part of the waves crashing  every few seconds was the luminous shine of the seaweed in the strong Australian sun.  This anchor is the original anchor from the Marie Gabrielle.  The Marie is just one of the many...
