‘The Italian Coast’, Italy, Cinque Terre, Monterosso

The Cinque Terre (five lands) of Italy’s Ligurian coast is made up of tiny medieval towns that have kept their character throughout the centuries.  Mostly inaccessible by car, these towns can be reached by a train that tunnels through large areas of the coastline mountain only to emerge at each town station.  In between each village are steep cliffs, suitable for wine and olive oil production.   Hiking trails connect each town and make for some beautiful panoramas.  Pictured above is Monterosso, one of the few towns with a beach.... ‘Marching Clouds’, Italy, Umbria, Castelluccio, Piano Grande Pass

Probably one of the most peaceful and serene places I’ve ever been in my life.  The clouds march over this large pass and cast dramatic shadows on the golden fields.  I could have stayed here forever.  Piano Grande Pass is located next to the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini or Monti Sibillini National Park.  The town of Castelluccio lies off in the distance.  It is the highest settlement in the Apennines Mountains and sits above the ‘Great Field’, pictured above. ‘On Top of the Hill’, Italy, Tuscany, Outside of Monticchiello

As I scrolled through the channels last night on television, almost every other station had some form of debate about our weakened dollar, political turbulence or the explosive growth of China and India.  I was even fortunate enough to hear a rerun of Thursday’s Donald Trump Tea Party rally at which I was certain  his head would blow off from the amount of egotistical nonsense that came out of his mouth.  I have to say I was more entertained by the wind attempting to lift that awful toupee (or deceased animal) glued... ‘Violet Blue’, Italy, Apennine Mountains, Umbria, Castelluccio di Norcia, Flower Fields

It snowed 18 inches of snow overnight in New York City last night.  Not only did we get a lot of snow but along with it hurricane-like wind that whipped through the city.  This morning it’s beautiful however.  We did get a white Christmas after all.  I’m off to go enjoy the snow for the day. I thought I’d warm myself up last night, so I edited a photo of Italy in the summertime.  Flower fields can be found throughout this magnificent country.  This photo is exactly how I remember it;... ‘Capestrano’, Italy, Abruzzo, L’Aquila, Capestrano

The Abruzzo region has over 21 ski areas, all within an hour of Rome.  These ski resorts have heights that are comparable to their Alpine neighbors to the north.  Because of their proximity to the Adriatic ocean and the winter precipitation patterns they often receive more snow than the Alps.  I feel that the Abruzzo region is often overlooked when people talk about Italy’s most beautiful regions. I found this mountainous area of Italy to be one of my favorites when I was touring through the countryside. Above is the... Read The Rest →

‘Field’s of Umbria,’ Italy, Apennine Mountains, Umbria Castelluccio di Norcia

I don’t often endorse snowboarding movies. All too often they’re made by heavy metal, roid raging thrill seekers who don’t have any clue as to how to put together a decently constructed movie. But I was  recently introduced to That’s It, That’s All and I’m mesmerized by the cinematography in this snowboarding film. The documentary captures the stunning skills of snowboarding legend Travis Rice and his entourage and is perfectly balanced with some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever seen.  Shot in HD, the quality of picture is the same, if not better... ‘Endorheic Body of Water’, Italy, Lago Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno is located in central Italy.  It’s a beautiful lake with some spectacular Italian sunsets.  This lake is actually an endorheic body of water.  An endorheic lake is a body of water that has no outlet.  Some of the more noted endorheic bodies of water include the Aral Sea, the Great Salt Lake, the Dead Sea and the Black Sea.  When in life would you ever need to know what an endorheic body of water is? I don’t know. But if you somehow make it on the show, ‘Who... Read The Rest →

‘Golden Fields’, Italy, Montepulciano, Countryside

There’s a particular area in Tuscany that’s absolutely surreal to the point where it’s like your dreaming.  The clouds roll over the landscape like marching armies enroute to Rome.  The clouds filter through a light hue of blue that perfectly complements Tuscany’s golden fields.  I usually don’t get that excited over farm fields but the fields of Tuscany are really sites of extremre beauty. Italy is a spectacular country and has given me a lot of amazing photographs.  This will be my last post from Italy for the time being however, as... Read The Rest →

‘Fun in the Sun’, Italy, Cinque Terre, Montorosso Beach

I touched upon the area of Cinque Terre briefly yesterday, but didn’t go into much detail.  The area is perhaps some of the most pristine and untouched coastline on all of the Italian Mediterranean.  Five miles of rocky coastline among two promontories, endless dry-laid stone walls, century old hillside vineyards, and five towns make up the distinct features of this UNESCO world heritage site.  Unlike most of the Mediterranean resort areas, the Cinque Terre region has not experienced a massive influx of development as a result of its rugged terrain... ‘Relax’, Italy, Cinque Terre, Montorosso

Cinque Terre, located in the northwest of Italy, is not far from the main centers of Genova, Florence, Pisa and even Rome and Milan.  It’s interesting that the Mediterranean is quite flat for the most part.  Sheltered from the larger oceans, I found the waves to be quite small.  It makes swimming out into the water much more relaxing although you miss out on some of the wave action you might find in other areas of the world.
