‘Farmstead’, United States, Wisconsin, Rusk County, Hawkins
I recently went through my grandmother’s photo albums. I came across an album of photos from my great grandparent’s farm. The photo above dates back to 1919. I am amazed to see the life they lived, the farm they had and even the clothing styles at the time. My grandmother looks great! Look at the shoes she wearing as she watches my great grandfather and (i assume his brother) prepare a Sunday meal. How times have changed. I love vintage photos such as this one. Share → Tweet
‘White Light’, United States, Wisconsin, Phillips, Northern Woods
Another photo from the woods. I admit I don’t take as many photos as I should in the wintertime, but the snow white is fun to work with. A photo tip – I find the bleach bypass process in Nik Software Color Effex Pro adds contrast and pop to the white snow. Masking it back in at a low opacity seems really make the snow pop. ‘A Morning Walk’, United States, Wisconsin, Phillips, Sunrise, County F Road
I walked down into my Grandmother’s kitchen this Christmas morning to spy the sun breaking through the winter cloud blanket. Bright colors prompted me to put on my boots and see what I could find. I walked down the road and enjoyed the silent breeze that started to wake as the sun coming up. There’s something special about the morning calm no matter where you are in the world. It’s the world waking up. Light pours over the horizon and within a matter of hours the landscape is a completely... Read The Rest →
‘Winter Wonderland’, United States, Wisconsin, Phillips, Northern Woods
I’ve been waiting for this shot. I’ve seen it and experienced it a handful of times, but I’ve struggled to capture the northern woods of Wisconsin. Why are the woods so hard to capture? There’s a lot going on – the bright sun above, dark shadows cast from the trees above and in general a lot of foliage. Yes, I processed this photo a bit. I don’t deny it, but this photo captures exactly what I see and feel when I walk through the northern woods of Wisconsin. You can... Read The Rest →
‘Antler Anyone?’, United States, Wisconsin, Winter, Flambeau Forest Inn
The bar owner of the Flambeau Forest Inn in northern Wisconsin is a smart man. People in northern Wisconsin enjoy their beer and late at night when people have had a few too many and they lose their inhibitions, they like to get on top of the bar and start dancing. Well not at the Flambeau Forest Inn. Anyone dumb enough to climb on top of the bar will get a sobering puncture wound from one of the many antlers nailed to the ceiling. This bar is the quintessential Northern Wisconsin woods... Read The Rest →
‘Northern Exposure’, United States, Wisconsin, Phillips, Northern Woods
I grew up in the northern woods of Wisconsin. It’s a place that’s near and dear to my heart. Sure it’s full of bugs, can be down right cold in the summer and it’s a long way away from any large city, but I’ll forever feel at home in these enchanted forests. Over the last few weeks, northern Wisconsin has experienced a lot of rain and the forests are as green as I’ve ever seen them. I spend a lot of my time walking through these green hallways, thinking, listening... Read The Rest →
